Santa Monica: an easy beach base

Pier days, walkable streets, and a direct train to downtown.

Local highlights

Santa Monica Pier is the classic stop, with Pacific Park’s rides above the sand. Third Street Promenade is a pedestrian shopping street a few blocks inland, and the beach bike path runs south toward Venice Beach.

Getting there and around

The Metro E Line ends at Downtown Santa Monica station, near the pier. The center is compact enough to walk. If you drive, Parking Structure 6 and other city garages are usually easier than street parking.

Practical tips

Mornings are often cool and grey near the coast, so pack a layer. Swim near staffed lifeguard towers and arrive early on warm weekends, when parking fills quickly.

Nearby attractions

Walk or cycle to the Venice Canals and Abbot Kinney, or drive inland to The Getty Center in Brentwood. Malibu makes a scenic half-day trip up the coast.

Confirm current opening hours, tickets, access rules, and transport before visiting.
